The Düsseldorf-based technology group Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Swiss Confederation for the production and delivery of 81mm mortar cargo ammunition. The contract has a total value in the mid-double-digit million EUR range.
The total scope of delivery includes 81mm mortars MX2-KM from Rheinmetall EXPAL Munitions SA as well as 81mm mortar cartridges Cargo for white light illumination, infrared illumination, and smoke screening based on RP (Red Phosphorus), which are produced by Rheinmetall Weapon and Ammunition GmbH at the Neuenburg am Rhein plant. The delivery is expected to be completed by 2025 and includes various additional services as part of the product introduction.
The cartridges are qualified for the 81mm mortar MX2-KM of the Swiss Armed Forces and form a mortar system with the weapon system, where both the ammunition and the weapon system are manufactured by Rheinmetall. At the conclusion of the qualification measures, the Cargo cartridges were verified at a test site on the Spanish coast.
