20 more Marder armored personnel carriers to Ukraine

Rheinmetall has again been commissioned by the German government to deliver Marder infantry fighting vehicles to Ukraine. The contract was awarded in May 2023 and is valued in the lower double-digit million EUR range. The Marder are set to be delivered in the summer of 2023.
Already on March 21, 2023, Rheinmetall had sent the first 20 infantry fighting vehicles ordered by the German government to Ukraine. Another 20 units were delivered directly from the stocks of the German armed forces to Ukraine. In addition to the Marder already contracted, Rheinmetall can make a further 60 units available. Work for this is already underway at Rheinmetall's locations in Kassel and Unterlüß. Up to ten infantry fighting vehicles can be delivered per month.

As part of the swap procedure initiated by the German government, Greece will also receive a total of 40 Marder infantry fighting vehicles from Rheinmetall. These will also be delivered in the summer of 2023. The swap procedure is a method to support Ukraine in its efforts against the Russian invasion in collaboration with European neighbors and NATO partners. In this process, NATO partners transfer large equipment from former Soviet production to Ukraine and receive available systems from Western production in return. Rheinmetall is involved in various swaps with the Greek, Czech, Slovak, and Slovenian armed forces.

The vehicles provided are refurbished Marder 1A3 from former stocks of the German armed forces. In the spring of 2022, Rheinmetall Landsysteme GmbH had already started, at its own expense, to refurbish the infantry fighting vehicles for immediate readiness at the locations in Unterlüß and Kiel. The Marder infantry fighting vehicle, developed for the German armed forces and still in use there, is one of the most proven weapon systems of its kind worldwide. The vehicle has been modernized and enhanced in combat capabilities several times throughout its use.
