He is small, black-orange striped, and does no harm to anyone? Far from it. We found NEMO: At the busy exhibition area at IDEX 2017 in Abu Dhabi, the stand of the Finnish company PATRIA with the innovative mortar system NEMO (Link) attracted attention. This heavy mortar - with a caliber of 120 mm - is in this case integrated into a completely self-sufficient container and contains all the equipment needed by a mortar unit for operations and combat in one package.
In its 20-foot EU standard size, the armored container includes its own power supply and air conditioning, as well as an NBC filtration system. The basic armor provides ballistic protection for a 3-soldier crew against infantry weapons but can be supplemented with up to 10 mm thick steel plating for higher protection. The storage space can accommodate up to 100 grenades, providing sustainable firepower.
The main advantage of the NEMO container system lies in its simple and unique mobility. Whether in static storage/object protection, as a mobile mortar unit (top) in direct support of advancing infantry, or stationed on a ship or speedboat (bottom), the flexible container system can adjust its firing position to the tactical situation within a very short time.
The NEMO mortar tower can rotate 360° and cover all areas from a minimum of 300 m to a maximum of 9,000 m with up to 10 grenades/min within its -3° to +85° elevation range. This supporting firepower gives the infantry sufficient "breathing room" in critical situations to respond appropriately to unexpected attacks. The NEMO is also available for infantry fighting vehicles (Link) and ships (Link).
