1,000 military trucks to the Bundeswehr

01/13/2020By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract at the end of December 2019 to deliver 1,000 logistics vehicles valued at 382 million euros gross to the German Bundeswehr. This is the third call-off from a framework contract closed in July 2017 for more than 2,200 state-of-the-art military trucks that the Bundeswehr is procuring under the project name "Ungeschützte Transportfahrzeuge". 675 vehicles belong to the payload category of 5 tons, while another 325 vehicles offer a payload of 15 tons. The trucks will be built from January 2020 by Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles GmbH (RMMV) in Vienna and delivered by the end of 2020.

The robust and off-road vehicles have a military basic configuration and are intended to be made available to the Bundeswehr for tasks within the Very High Readiness Joint Task Force (VJTF) 2023 as well.

The framework contract, awarded on July 5, 2017 by the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use (BAAINBw) and spanning seven years, includes a total of 2,271 HX family vehicles. In a first step, a batch of 558 trucks was taken under contract. In May 2019, the first call-off of 252 vehicles followed, and in November 2019, a second call-off of 60 more trucks.
With this significant project of renewing the logistics vehicles, the Düsseldorf-based technology group for mobility and security is taking a leading role in the modernization of the Bundeswehr's fleet comprising many thousands of trucks.

The majority of the essential components – engines, axles, transmissions, and bodies – are of German manufacture, with vehicle assembly to take place at the RMMV plant in Vienna. The high global distribution of RMMV vehicles brings significant advantages in terms of interoperability and logistics, particularly for multinational operations. Currently, countries such as the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and Denmark are users. Norway and Sweden have also placed truck orders of significant sizes with Rheinmetall.
