The Procurement Office of the Bundeswehr has awarded KNDS Deutschland GmbH & Co. KG Kassel with the modernization of the Fennek reconnaissance vehicle. The main weapon system of the Army's reconnaissance troops will receive an Observation and Reconnaissance Equipment (BAA) III adapted to the latest state of the art technology.
"With this modernization, the Bundeswehr will have a capability for reconnaissance and identification adapted to the operational requirements of national and alliance defense," said the responsible project manager at BAAINBw. The optimization will affect the 30 Fennek 1A2 scout vehicles and the 50 Joint Fire Support Team (JFST) Fennek vehicles, and will include a pool of reserves that will significantly increase the vehicles' readiness for training, exercises, and mission-like commitments.
At the end of June, the budgetary resources required for this procurement were approved by the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag as part of a so-called 25-million-euro submission. The financing will be provided through the Bundeswehr special fund and the regular defense budget. Between 2027 and 2029, the new BAAs, including the reserve pool, will be delivered and integrated into the vehicles. The reserve pool will then be available to the Bundeswehr as spare parts inventory.
The main reconnaissance equipment of the Fennek is the BAA, which includes a thermal imaging device, a day sight camera, and a laser rangefinder. The entire system is mounted on a retractable mast with a rotating and tilting platform. In addition to optimizing the BAA, the integration of a laser target designator capable of guiding laser-guided ammunition to the target is planned. With the modernization of the BAA, a large part of the Fennek fleet will have a uniform level of reconnaissance technology in the future.
The Fennek has been in use in the Bundeswehr since 2003. With its sensors and other reconnaissance systems carried on the vehicle, the three-person crew can collect information about potential enemy forces during day, night, and low visibility conditions.
