Rheinmetall takes over ammunition factory in Hungary

The Düsseldorf-based technology group Rheinmetall officially inaugurated its new state-of-the-art 30mm ammunition factory in Várpalota, Hungary on July 29, 2024.

The ceremony was attended by Hungarian Defense Minister Kristóf Szalay-Bobrovniczky, Rheinmetall AG CEO Armin Papperger, and other senior representatives of the Hungarian government.

The new manufacturing facility in Várpalota is a significant milestone in Rheinmetall's expansion strategy and demonstrates the company's commitment to providing the latest technologies to support the defense capabilities of its partners. The facility is designed to produce 30mm ammunition for the KF41 Lynx infantry fighting vehicle, which the Hungarian Armed Forces will receive and which is built in Zalaegerszeg. The Várpalota plant will commence production in October 2024. In a second phase, ammunition for main battle tanks and artillery as well as fuses will also be manufactured in Várpalota. The final completion of the company site will cover approximately 150 hectares.

In his opening speech, Armin Papperger emphasized the importance of the new factory for Rheinmetall and the location in Hungary: „The opening of this state-of-the-art ammunition factory in Várpalota is a clear sign of our commitment to innovation and quality. This facility will not only enhance the defense capabilities of our partners in Hungary and worldwide, but also contribute to the economic development of the region.“

Hungarian Defense Minister Szalay-Bobrovniczky highlighted the strategic importance of cooperation with Rheinmetall in his speech, emphasizing the joint efforts to strengthen the national security and defense industry.

The new factory in Várpalota is equipped with state-of-the-art technology and will create more than 200 jobs in the region, making an important contribution to the local economy. The establishment of the Lynx infantry fighting vehicle and other Lynx variants also enhances the development of the Hungarian defense industry. Rheinmetall continues its tradition of contributing to global security through technological innovation and close partnerships.
