Combat Vehicles

Transport tank Fuchs loaded

10/14/2021By Redaktion

Rheinmetall has developed a new version of the armored transport vehicle Fuchs. With the tried and tested 6x6 vehicle as a high roof, a variety of functional capabilities can be implemented across the entire spectrum of operations. This highly mobile vehicle system can be used in this version from a command post vehicle to a protected ambulance. Rheinmetall presents the demonstrator in the configuration of a protected ambulance from October 14-15, 2021 at the congress of the Society for Military Medicine and Military Pharmacy in the Rhein-Mosel-Halle in Koblenz.

The Fuchs High Roof demonstrator already stands out externally due to the modernized vehicle design and the increased roof height. This expands the interior volume to twelve cubic meters. The headroom is 1.60 meters instead of the previous 1.26 meters. In the version as a protected ambulance, the Fuchs High Roof can transport four wounded: two lying down, two sitting. Furthermore, the vehicle is equipped with a modern 360-degree vision system with day and night vision as well as fusion, which is already used in the Puma infantry fighting vehicle. This significantly improves the reconnaissance capabilities for the crew. It is possible to connect additional sensors or a weapon station in accordance with NATO Generic Vehicle Architecture (NGVA), as well as to use virtual reality goggles that allow the crew to "see through the armor". With this equipment, the Fuchs, like the Puma, still has the ability to connect dismounted forces, such as paramedics equipped with a variant of the Future Soldier System - Extended System (IdZ-ES). With the standardized command equipment, the "paramedics of the future" have the same situational information as the supporting troop.

In addition, the modernized Fuchs is characterized by a new, higher-performance engine, a new distribution gearbox, a new brake system, and digital onboard electronics. All of this makes the vehicle system even more maneuverable in rough terrain and even more ergonomic to operate.

The Fuchs High Roof demonstrator was developed at the Rheinmetall Landsysteme site in Kassel. The northern Hessian metropolis is the birthplace of the Fuchs armored transport vehicle.

The German Bundeswehr has been using the TPz Fuchs since 1979 in a variety of versions and had over a hundred Fuchs vehicles in operation in Afghanistan. Due to its versatile applications and high reliability, the Fuchs is popular in the Bundeswehr and is continuously being further developed after 40 years of use.

Up to now, around 1,600 Fuchs vehicles have been built. Armed forces of numerous nations use the proven system in various versions, e.g., for troop transport, as a command post or ambulance, as well as for NBC reconnaissance. More about armored wheeled vehicles by Rheinmetall.
