The Bundeswehr is optimizing the food supply for soldiers in the field by acquiring new mobile field kitchens. Annette Lehnigk-Emden (center), the President of the Procurement Office of the Bundeswehr, yesterday took over the first of 85 systems from a procurement framework agreement with Kärcher Futuretech GmbH in Schwaikheim. Up to 400 field kitchens can be ordered from this agreement in the future.
Lehnigk-Emden emphasized during the handover that the principle of "thinking from the perspective of deployment" aims to enable the Bundeswehr to be ready and capable of deployment across the entire spectrum of tasks. Operational capability includes troop feeding, which is a strategically important area of logistics. Troop feeding is of particular importance for maintaining the combat effectiveness and morale of soldiers.
"The Mobile Field Kitchen is more than just a snack bar in the field," she emphasized in the presence of numerous guests, including representatives from the Logistics Command of the Bundeswehr and the Medical Service Command, as well as members of the project team and the contractor, Kärcher Futuretech GmbH. "Before us stands an excellent example of the good and effective collaboration between a public contractor and a contractor of the German medium-sized companies." Hartmut Jenner, CEO of Kärcher, also thanked for the good and intensive cooperation on this challenging project.
Prior to the start of serial delivery, a system housed in two 20-foot containers underwent extensive testing, including exposure to heat and cold conditions in Spain and at the Arctic Circle. During numerous tests under sometimes extreme climatic conditions, the new field kitchen system successfully demonstrated all required functionalities and compliance with current safety and hygiene standards.
The mobile field kitchen is used for storing, preparing, cooking, and serving food and drinks for up to 250 people. All necessary technical equipment, operating materials, and associated food (including 2,600 liters of drinking water) are carried for autonomous operation for 24 hours. The new kitchen systems are designed for scenarios of national and alliance defense as well as global deployment.
To make the new systems quickly available to the troops, 30 systems will now be delivered by the industry each year.
