HENSOLDT: Self-protection sensors for Ukrainian helicopters

06/26/2023By Redaktion

The sensor solutions provider HENSOLDT equips helicopters of the Ukrainian armed forces with state-of-the-art detection and self-protection sensors. The order includes 16 Airborne Missile Protection System (AMPS) sensor solutions. The order value is in the double-digit million range. With the delivery, HENSOLDT ensures a modern and necessary equipment for the Ukrainian armed forces due to current events. The Czech system integrator LOM PRAHA is the designated equipping company.

The Airborne Missile Protection System is a flexible, autonomous self-protection system for helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft. Due to its modular design, AMPS can be easily configured to meet specific operational requirements and for different mission profiles. Parts of the AMPS sensor solution include the Missile Launch Detection Sensor (MILDS), an Advanced Control and Display Unit (ACDU), and the active confirmation system (MACS), which determines the distance and speed of detected projectiles and eliminates false alarms. The Counter Measure Dispensing Systems (CMDS) already present on the helicopters can continue to operate with the current AMPS configuration.

A high percentage of aircraft losses in recent operational areas have been caused by Infrared Surface-to-Air Missiles (IR SAMs). In addition, laser and radar threats are increasingly encountered in operational areas. To reliably detect these threats, AMPS can be configured with rocket, laser, and radar warning systems to provide the best possible protection through rapid detection. HENSOLDT already protects more than 2,000 different flying platforms with AMPS. HERE you can find all the information about the system.
