For a long time, the Steyr AUG was simply the Steyr AUG. And while the AR15 could always be treated like Lego for men, there wasn't much room for pimping the Austrian assault rifle. Which is a shame, because modularity offers good opportunities for modernizing a weapon. One of the first to want to improve the Steyr AUG was Gabe Suarez. His parts are currently not available, but we'll show them to you, because it's also interesting to know what was available.
The Combat Rail from Suarez International is installed here. It can be easily recognized by the cut-outs. The weapon and rail here have a Russian-looking Cerakote coating in earth brown.
Originally, the set comes in black and with the Suarez logos. Also note the small forward rail that replaces the front grip. Unfortunately, it was not visible on our earth brown model.
This is what it looks like when mounted. The story behind the weapon is from 2014 and can be read on the FIREARMS BLOG. Also interesting, the shooter here still uses a folding grip.
Here, the Combat Rail replaces the rail from Steyr on an AUG A3Z.
It is normally screwed onto the housing. The milling provides additional weight savings.
Especially interesting is that Gabe Suarez sought a solution to give the Steyr AUG a functional deflector.
It is not fixedly connected to the rail, but optional and fixed with two screws.
View of the shell deflector from the rear. The rail drawn far back also provides a good index point for the shooter who rests his cheek on the stock.
Comparison with the original rail from Steyr. The Suarez Combat Rail is also flat and low-profile, the extremely good housing rail from Corvus Defensio seems a bit bulkier, especially because it has no cut-outs and visually, because it is not flat at the front and rear.
A rarely seen part is also the Charging Handle from Suarez International.
The charging handle is often discussed with the AUG, because when using a rail with mounted optics, the charging handle and the edges of the optics tend to play painfully with the fingers.
This charging handle provides a secure grip away from the body of the AUG.
The grooves also prevent slipping.
