US Army: New hearing protection for dogs

07/27/2022By Redaktion

With the military, it's loud. This is not only due to various explosions but also to the extensive use of heavy equipment such as tanks and helicopters. This high level of noise affects humans as well as service dogs. To protect their hearing, there are, of course, some hearing protection systems similar to earmuffs. The systems currently used for military dogs are rigid and difficult to put on the dogs. With the support of the U.S. Army Medical Research and Development Command, the clinical device company Zeteo Technology has been working on developing better protection systems.

The product called Canine Auditory Protection System (CAPS) is a small hood made of sound-absorbing materials that block loud noises. The hood is light and flexible, making it easy to fit on the dog's head while protecting the ears from extreme noise. CAPS is only one centimeter thick, so it is not cumbersome for dogs working in tight spaces and can be worn along with other protective equipment, such as goggles. Whether and when CAPS will be widely distributed is not yet determined.
