Rheinmetall has delivered a mobile field hospital to Ukraine. The order for this and accompanying training services was received by Rheinmetall's subsidiary Rheinmetall Mobile Systems GmbH (RMS) from the Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg) in September 2022. The order is worth around 9 million EUR.
The modern hospital includes 32 patient beds, including eight intensive care beds, an operating room with associated sterilization, imaging diagnostics with X-ray and computer tomography, a laboratory, a pharmacy, as well as administrative and staff areas. It therefore complies with NATO Role-2 standards. In two further deliveries at the end of 2023 and beginning of 2024, RMS will also hand over two highly mobile rescue stations to Ukraine.
In addition to the field hospital itself, Rheinmetall also delivered the necessary transport units to Ukraine. The ten truck convoys with trailers brought the 20 containers to their destination.
The hospital is a completely self-sufficient medical care unit. It contains not only medical modules in expandable containers and tents, but also supplies itself with electricity and medical gases through generators. Also integrated are water supply including treatment and decontamination, as well as accommodation units with sanitary modules for patients and staff. The quality of the system can be seen in the details: for example, the water networks are heated and the sensitive computer tomograph in the container is equipped with a sophisticated transport system. This allows for transportation by land, water, and air as well as immediate readiness for use after the system has been deployed. Throughout the hospital, only reusable materials are used, as the system is designed for mobile use.
The handover of the mobile field hospital took place in two steps: First, ten Ukrainian soldiers completed a 14-day training in the assembly and disassembly, transport, and operation of the hospital. Following that, the official handover to Ukraine took place at the designated handover location. The training conducted by RMS employees was completed by the Ukrainian soldiers in August 2023 in a trade fair hall in Friedrichshafen (Baden-Württemberg). Half of them already had medical training, and the other half had technical training. They came directly from their deployment in Ukraine to Germany for the two-week training.
