Monitoring the monitors: Discussion at the German Spy Museum

11/19/2018By Redaktion

"But who watches the watchers?" is a well-known phrase when it comes to democratic oversight of intelligence services. Those who work in secret must be particularly monitored. As part of the focus topic "Democracy and Intelligence Services" at the German Spy Museum, controllers and those being controlled discuss the parliamentary control of intelligence services.

The Parliamentary Control Committee of the Bundestag has been in the spotlight of public attention not only since the NSA scandal. Sometimes it criticizes, sometimes it is criticized. Nine members of parliament and, most recently, a permanent representative are supposed to control the work of the BND, the Office for the Protection of the Constitution (Verfassungsschutz), and the Military Counterintelligence Service (MAD) behind firmly closed doors.

The President of the BND, Dr. Bruno Kahl, the Members of Parliament Uli Grötsch and Konstantin von Notz, both members of the Parliamentary Control Committee, and Prof. Anna Daun, Professor of Security Management at the Berlin School of Economics and Law, will discuss how this works on November 20th at 7 pm.
