Anyone who takes a harbor tour in Hamburg will hardly believe their eyes. Suddenly, a submarine anchors right next to the fish market - and it looks suspiciously Soviet! It is, but fortunately it's just a floating museum and we visited it.
This is a former Soviet espionage submarine of the Tango class, built in 1976, which has been operating as a museum since 2002. This class was one of the largest non-nuclear submarines with diesel-electric propulsion, but inside it is far from spacious. The smell of diesel, oil, and saltwater immediately hits you as you enter the submarine. In this boat, 84 men crowded together during missions. And that at about 40°C, hard to imagine, considering that in a visitor group of ten people everything already feels very tight.
We recommend taking a tour (duration approx. 45 min) to be able to access the command bridge and not miss out on many small details. During the tour, you also get a good insight into the tough life on board. For those who have always wanted to smell submarine air, this museum is definitely worth a visit, as well as for everyone else. You can find more information on how to get there and prices on the museum's website.
