This is SPARTA!

09/10/2010By Redaktion

… and that's the real one, in Greece. Sparta is called Sparti in modern Greek (Σπάρτη) and actually not really worth a separate trip. But if you happen to be in the area, you can stop by, just like us. And let's be honest, who if not us …

Sparta offers very few ancient ruins, and the two most exciting tourist attractions are the larger-than-life statue of King Leonidas with the beautiful inscription "Molon Labe" and the small museum with the original bust of the same gentleman. The Olive Museum is also worth a visit for those who want to learn about olives and their production. Here is a picture of the "exciting" ruins with the 2,400m high Taygetos mountain range in the background.

Near Sparta is the Byzantine ruins of Mystras, which is definitely worth a visit, so if you ever find yourself in Laconia - that's the area - check out Sparta!
