The assault rifle 77 (StG 77), internationally known as the Army Universal Rifle (AUG), is now 40 years old and one of the success stories of Austrian defense technology. This success was due, among other things, to the close cooperation between industrial defense technology and military defense technology.
The book presents the history in an exciting way with descriptions of the backgrounds and the people involved. For those interested in technology, all variants from the first preliminary study models to the latest version are shown with mostly unpublished pictures. The 150-year history of the Austrian infantry weapon, starting with the first introduced breechloader, is also presented in full detail. The book not only extensively discusses the history of Austrian industrial defense technology, but also for the first time extensively covers the history of military defense technology in Austria, which can also look back on 150 years.
The authors are not only recognized experts in their field, but also witnesses to the documented developments. Friedrich Aigner spent his entire professional life in various positions at Steyr. He accompanied the development and production of the StG 77 from 1972 onwards. Brigadier Michael Janisch, as the current head of the Office for Armament and Defense Technology, has extensively studied the history of Austrian defense technology. He has managed to track down numerous documents from the monarchy and the First Republic, some of which have not been published. Since the history of military defense technology was not published for reasons of confidentiality, their history is now being presented to the public for the first time. Ingo Wieser started as a young officer in defense technology in the field of weapon testing when the StG 77 was introduced. Numerous modifications and further developments were tested under his leadership.
The book is therefore not only aimed at technically oriented readers, but also at those interested in history and also serves as a comprehensive, visually appealing reference work on the armament of the Austrian army over the past 150 years. HERE you can take a look at the book with us.
