Saab together with Boeing conducted a successful long-range test launch of the Ground-Launched Small Diameter Bomb (GLSDB) in Norway. The test launch took place on September 26, 2019 at the Andøya Test Center in Andenes, Norway. The aim of the test was to hit a predetermined target in the sea, 130 km away from the launcher. The launcher used for the launch was a specially made, fully autonomous 20-foot container.
"In collaboration with Boeing, we have developed a highly competent system that offers high precision over long distances. We see a lot of potential in the GLSDB as it provides long-range artillery capability to armed forces worldwide, which is in high demand," said Görgen Johansson, Head of the Saab Dynamics business area.
GLSDB is a partnership between Saab and Boeing. The GLSDB system is distinguished by its high accuracy over long distances and its ability to fly complex flight paths and maneuvers to reach targets that cannot be reached by conventional direct and indirect firearms. It is launcher-independent, meaning it can be fired from a containerized solution as well as from any launcher that can use the M26 launch pod container, such as HIMARS, M270, and ChunMoo. The containerized solution can also be deployed onboard ships, allowing GLSDB to fire from both land and sea installations.
"Boeing and Saab bring together deep expertise in precision weapon systems and the ability to rapidly integrate and test solutions," said Cindy Grünfelder, Vice President, Boeing Weapons. "The combination of our companies' expertise, experience, and resources has resulted in an advanced, cost-efficient, and sustainable global rocket artillery solution that provides soldiers with the necessary level of capabilities to tackle current and future threats in a joint force environment."
GLSDB provides land and sea forces with a mobile, organic capability to hit targets that were previously beyond their reach. This is achieved by leveraging the maneuverability and accuracy of the small diameter bomb. GLSDB is the ultimate long-range solution that combines affordability and performance, meeting the evolving needs of the armed forces for today and tomorrow.
