Rheinmetall: Safe in prison

04/13/2017By Redaktion

The Rheinmetall AG has won two important initial contracts for the protection of civil objects against drones. The Düsseldorf technology group has been commissioned by the Lenzburg prison and the Bostadel Inter-Cantonal Prison in Switzerland to install a drone detection system at each location. The so-called Radshield System is a reconnaissance system that monitors the grounds of the prisons day and night with video cameras, infrared sensors, and radar, detecting all flying objects - drones as well as model airplanes or balloons. The detection systems will soon be operational and will make a significant contribution to uncovering the introduction of prohibited items - such as weapons, drugs, tools, or mobile devices - in order to take appropriate measures. Even objects with a diameter of a few centimeters thrown into the facilities can be registered.

Increase in Drone Incursions

Incidents involving remote-controlled drones transporting prohibited items onto the grounds of penitentiaries have increased significantly worldwide in recent years. In German correctional facilities, there have been incidents almost weekly in recent months. In Switzerland, several attempts have also been recorded to fly various items into correctional facilities. Active disruption ("jamming") of drones using electronic interference mechanisms is ineffective against the insertion of objects due to the ongoing evolution of drone technology.

Timely Alerting

The Rheinmetall Radshield drone defense system enables security personnel to monitor the perimeter and critical sections of the facility at any time - even at night. As soon as a foreign object flies into the monitored area, the staff is immediately alerted to take appropriate action, such as closing off affected areas of the penitentiary, evacuations, or searches of individuals and areas of the facility.
