An international customer has commissioned Rheinmetall to modernize its cannon-based 35mm air defense systems. The commission also includes ammunition and other components for the modernized Skyguard batteries. The work will begin in 2023. The contract value is in the low three-digit million EUR range.
Rheinmetall will bring the 35mm twin cannons of the customer's country up to date with the latest Oerlikon GDF009 standard. These will use the airburst-capable AHEAD ammunition. This will enable the armed forces of the customer's country to combat a variety of air threats – including small drones (Small Unmanned Aerial Systems). The order will be managed by Rheinmetall Italia.
The contract is of great importance to Rheinmetall. It not only strengthens the long-standing customer relationships, but also underscores the high level of trust in Rheinmetall's globally leading expertise in the field of ground-based cannon-based air defense.
Rheinmetall is one of the world's leading manufacturers of complex weapon systems for air defense. In cannon-based air defense, the company is the market leader and the only comprehensive system provider for fire control, guns, integrated missile launchers, and AHEAD ammunition. Flight surveillance systems and radar technology with search and acquisition radars, powerful sensors, and high-energy laser effectors complete the portfolio.
