Rheinmetall HX 8x8: The slightly different excavator

02/25/2022By Redaktion

Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles, in cooperation with the Slovak company CSM Industry, has presented a new highly mobile multipurpose excavator vehicle based on the HX 8x8. The HX 8x8 Excavator is part of the globally proven logistics vehicle family from Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV). It features an excavator body of the UDS 214 type, also a proven system from the Slovak crane and excavator manufacturer CSM Industry from Tisovec. The HX 8x8 Excavator is designed for use in pioneer troops or for disaster relief.

The excavator body can swivel 360 degrees and has a telescopic arm that can extend up to 14.60 meters in length.

It can use various tools - in addition to excavator buckets, it can also use hooks or hydraulic drum cutters. The versatile device can lift loads of up to 7.5 tons, making it suitable as a makeshift crane. Upon customer request, the excavator operator's cabin can also be protected according to STANAG requirements and equipped with protective ventilation.

Like the entire HX family from RMMV, the HX 8x8 is designed as a military-off-the-shelf vehicle for the toughest military operations and offers excellent mobility even in challenging terrain. In its basic configuration, the system is ready for use at a total weight of 28 tons.

The MAN D2676 diesel engine delivers a power of 387 kW (540 hp), allowing the HX 8x8 Excavator to reach speeds of up to 90 km/h. The vehicle can handle slopes of 60 percent and cross waters up to 1.5 meters deep. Upon request, the HX 8x8 Excavator can be equipped with Rheinmetall's protected Integrated Armoured Cabin (IAC) or prepared for optional use. Likewise, a remotely controlled weapon station can be installed for self-protection.

Belonging to the HX family - about 16,000 vehicles worldwide are currently in use - offers advantages in terms of maintenance, repair, and training. Many NATO countries already use the HX family, so there are synergies particularly in multinational operations. Rheinmetall has presented here on SPARTANAT with the HX3 the latest generation of its globally proven HX trucks.

The HX 8x8 Excavator is another example of Rheinmetall's cooperation with European and international partners. This cooperation is not only about technological collaboration. Through cooperation with Rheinmetall, CSM could also open up additional export markets.

In addition, the German technology company is preparing further options for cooperation with the local industry in Slovakia. One possible project would be the production of infantry fighting vehicles in the NATO country. The background is an offer from Hungary to Slovakia to produce the modern tracked vehicle family Lynx KF41 developed by Rheinmetall as part of a Government to Government deal. The Lynx family impresses not only in terms of its performance parameters. It also sets new standards in terms of defense cooperation between NATO members and partners. Hungary chose Lynx in 2021 and will build the majority of its Lynx fleet in its own country in close cooperation with Rheinmetall. In the event of a decision in favor of Lynx, the NATO member Slovakia would locally produce the majority of its vehicle fleet and also benefit from extensive defense cooperation, which also contributes to value creation and to maintaining and expanding defense technological competence in the country.
