Leather jackets have gone out of fashion in recent years. Softshell and Hardshell are the way to go now. But we have here an item that could change that. VIKTOS specializes in tactical fashion and they have designed a jacket that looks like a Softshell but is actually made of leather. And what a jacket it is...
Here are the (very slick) images from VIKTOS that beautifully showcase the cut and design of the jacket.
And the back view. Everything is very straight, as mentioned: we would have thought it was just a normal Softshell if we hadn't seen it up close.
On a person, it looks less slick. We wore this piece ourselves during the SHOT SHOW 2019 and were impressed.
It starts with the tactile feel. When someone hands you the jacket, it suddenly feels twice as heavy as expected. Yes, it's made of cowhide, but modernized with a three-layer, waterproof, and breathable inner lining. And it comes with all the features a modern functional jacket should have.
But let's start from the top. Softshell means hooded jacket. That's what the VIKTOS Actual is, spacious and large, with the ability to adjust to your head.
The hood is raised high, meaning the wearer can get the collar over their chin and close it tightly. You can also see the straps for hood adjustment and small holes in the leather for extra breathability around the nose area.
Looking at the sleeves and its features: mobility is key, so a material mix was used here. Flexible fabric ensures you don't feel like a one-man tank in black.
Now onto the pockets. An underarm pocket offers practical storage space.
Here you can see the expansion joint on the arm. Looks like something you'd find on a motorcycle jacket and functions like one too.
In terms of pocket design, the Actual is classically structured but has more compartments than the average jacket. In Tan, you can clearly see the main zipper (YKK made), two chest pockets, and two additional side pockets.
The side pockets are as roomy as Russia, and when it's cold, the wearer can tuck their hands in for warmth.
The chest pockets also offer plenty of space.
Particularly practical for shooters are the side zippers. Yes, they can also be used for ventilation when it gets warm in the Actual. The interior looks like that of a laminate jacket.
It technically is with its three-layer laminate designed to keep moisture out. What we haven't tested: we never wore the jacket in the rain. Temperature-wise, it's best to wear it in cooler weather, or else it might get warm quickly even with the ventilation zippers.
But the ideal use is that the jacket can be unzipped on the sides when wearing a holster. Appropriately named "Gunvent" by VIKTOS.
The jacket can also be zipped up on the sides and the zipper opened upwards. This allows easy access to the weapon.
