We all like to have dry and warm feet. But what happens when your footwear starts to lose its waterproofing during constant rain and crossing streams? That's right, it quickly becomes very unpleasant. However, there is a solution with the Trekking Sock from SealSkinz.
The classic black with olive accents may not seem spectacular at first glance, but it's once again the inner values that count. These socks have a built-in membrane that, in combination with the inner layer of Merino wool, provides waterproofing as well as optimal thermoregulation. The calf-height cut also ensures an increased water depth capability. This can easily be tested at home. Put on the socks, march into cold water (in the bathtub), and see what happens.
Clear first conclusion after 5 minutes of waiting: dry and warm, just as promised. Further tests could have been easily done in puddles or on the banks of the Danube, but this time we wanted to really put them to the test. What better place to do that than at a very special event on a rainy and cold autumn weekend.
Rovereto in northern Italy hosted the premiere of the Fisherman's Friend Strongmen Run Edizione Italia on September 29th. A competition known for water, mud, and everything else that makes a dirt runner's heart beat faster. At 15°C with a light wind and pouring rain, the 2 rounds (9km each) over 24 obstacles were tackled. Up to kilometer 9, the feet were truly warm and dry. However, obstacle 12 (The Lagoon of Eternity) brought a dramatic turn of events.
As long as the water doesn't reach the top of the socks, everything is fine. But when you're standing in water up to your hips, the functionality quickly ends. As good as the socks are at repelling water, they are just as good at retaining it once it's inside. The feeling of walking with them is simply indescribable. These socks may not be ideal for such ventures, but in those situations, only a drysuit would protect you from the wetness.
Conclusion: At around €40, this is certainly not a cheap purchase from the sock segment, but the comfort, quality, and functionality justify the price. So if you're looking for additional protection against wetness and cold on autumnal (hiking) days, these socks are the right choice! Also ideal as liners for non-waterproof boots.
Available at Comrade for €39.96 excluding shipping (special price)
