REVIEW: PMAG cases for the Systema PTW

12/01/2010By Redaktion

In practice, in Special Operation Forces (SOF), the classic metal M4 magazine is increasingly being replaced by the PMAG from Magpul. Fits better, leads to fewer loading jams. For AEGs, there are specific PMAG variants from Magpul, but with the Systema PTW it has been difficult so far. The most expensive option: Convert (or have converted) a real PMAG to a PTW magazine (black magazine on top). Now, a slightly cheaper option: The PMAG Shell from Rampo, which can be purchased starting at 16 pounds (tan magazine on top). We tested on SPARTANAT what the shell can do.

The black part is the internals of a PTW magazine. You have to provide this yourself by salvaging a magazine, or you can buy it together with the rest in the picture: The PMAG Shell comes with foam padding, fixing plate, and base plate. If you want to spend more money, you can also afford the Ranger Plates separately. The rubber grip makes the PMAG easier to draw and allows it to fall softer on the ground.

The assembly is very simple: insert the internals of the PTW magazine into the shell. They hold relatively tight there, further securing with small bolts as in the original magazine is not provided nor necessary.

Turn the PMAG around, insert the foam piece. This is not just a filler, but serves an important function.

Now insert the fixing plate. The foam lets it almost flush with the magazine edge.

Now slide on the base plate, held in place by the groove of the fixing plate pushed forward by the foam. Alternatively, the Ranger Plates also work. The PMAG for the Systema PTW is now ready.

CONCLUSION: Rampo's PMAG Shell is a really practical product, easy to assemble even for novices. The material is slightly more flexible than a real PMAG, the cast also integrates the cutouts for the PTW magazine internals, which must be cut out separately when converting with real PMAGs (see black magazine). The shell only accepts real PTW magazine internals, for the use of cheaper Mag or Vanaras internals, it must be modified accordingly.

Rampo's PMAG Shells are available in Tan, OD, and Black colors, priced at 16 pounds each. Those who prefer Ranger Plates can get them in Tan or Black for an additional 5 pounds. Shell and Ranger Plates together cost 20 pounds. There is also a 5-pound international shipping fee for each order. Keith's shop, who distributes the PMAG Shells in Europe, can be found in the Systema Forum here. Orders or inquiries can be made directly via email to: [email protected]

Three magazines compared (from left to right): Systema PTW Magazine, Real "Steel" PMAG converted with Systema Internals, and Rampo's PMAG Shell with Systema Internals.
