It's always nice to be invited for a meal, as it brings people together. Military rations are particularly interesting, as they reveal national differences. At IDET 2023 in Brno, Czech Republic, we were invited by ONEMEAL: on the table (days later) was the menu BPDi 5 Individual Food Ration Pack of the Czech Army.
So let's dig in: The packaging is bigger than the American MRE…
…and overall, it is also loosely packed. Therefore, you have a flatter bag, not a brick like the Americans.
Without the green cover, here is the complete contents of a package laid out, we will go through everything individually.
The basis for a warm meal is a heater, which works similarly to the one in the US Army, but looks more robust.
When it comes to utensils, they simply rely on a spoon.
And it's made of wood. This is very environmentally friendly.
The small bag inside the big bag contains the usual ingredients: sugar, salt, coffee and creamer, and a moist towel for after the meal.
This is the labeling of our menu.
Since we have a sweet tooth, we start with the sweets. There is a small bag of trail mix.
A mix of candied fruits, nuts, and raisins. Very tasty.
Chocolate is always good, a dark chocolate bar provides energy.
The instant drink makes a good liter of juice, just mix and stir, and it's also very good.
The main course from the pack is pork with diced potatoes and beans. Warmed excellently by the heater, the ready meal was a real treat in terms of taste. Really well cooked and very delicious and filling.
It was served with a solid coleslaw with corn, which can be warmed up but also eaten cold. Surprisingly sweet, this dish.
CONCLUSION: Czech dining at home? Worked out well: BPDi 5 Individual Food Ration Pack was a wonderful MRE and you can be happy with the Czech army for having such good field rations.
The Czech MRE is produced as ONEMEAL by the Czech company Schindler Food s.r.o.. We would eat more anytime...
