REVIEW: Olight ODIN Mini

04/21/2021By Redaktion

Today in our detailed review: the one-eyed, Nordic godfather himself, ODIN. But not in person, but as a weapon light from OLIGHT. And not as the great ODIN, but in the mini version. ODIN Mini, that is. As we will see, this does not diminish his divine power.

This is his Valhalla, the elegant box in which you receive your ODIN Mini.

Almost of divine beauty. When you open it, you might think you've got a product from Apple. This weapon light is really tastefully packaged.

What's inside for you? Besides the ODIN Mini, it includes the M-Lok mount, the cable switch, spare screws, charging cable, Allen key, small cable ties, and the user manual, so everything you need to enthrone ODIN.

The Light

Now to the little father god himself: ODIN Mini measures 11.5 cm and has a diameter of 2.9 cm at the lamp head and ~2.6 cm at the body. The lamp is powered by a 2,040mAh 18,500 lithium battery. The advantage is: you only need one rechargeable battery for use. Quick replacement is only possible with a second battery that you must carry charged. Regular batteries are not compatible with this private revelation of ODIN.

The Odin Mini offers up to 1,250 lumens with a range of 240 meters. You can find the exact values and runtimes listed directly at Olight.

For size comparison, we placed the ODIN Mini next to a regular Surefire Scoutlight. As you can see, the ODIN Mini is about 3 cm shorter, but the body is a bit sturdier.

The ODIN Mini battery is charged via the switch on the back. This takes about three hours when the battery is very low.

The Mount

We find the mounting of the ODIN lights really interesting. The Mini comes with the angled M-Lok mount.

The light is simply slid into it and secured using the small rotary switch.

The advantage is that you can detach the light from the weapon at any time and charge it outside of the gun safe.

We also find the position of the ODIN Mini with the mounting to be very successful.

For those who want, you can also get the Picatinny mount additionally. This is included with the normal, large ODIN. So you could quickly switch the light between different weapons.

The underside of the mounting rail has the same hole pattern as the Surefire Scout Light.

This opens up the world of aftermarket light mounts for you. The only downside is that you have to take the light and weapon out of the gun safe to charge it. Or you can disassemble the godfather with the mount.

Operation

The operation is quite simple. Press the rear button lightly, and ODIN shines with 200 lumens comfortably.

If you keep your thumb on it, you are in "momentary mode". The divine light goes out as soon as you release the pressure. If you press gently and briefly, it stays on. In the image, you can see the 200 lumen mode.

If the shooter now presses the switch all the way, the "Full Power" mode comes on. Depending on the battery level, this is between 1,250 and 200 lumens. As you can see, it is really very bright.

The Cable Switch

The cable switch is docked to the rear button. This is also done magnetically, like the charging cable.

As an additional safety measure, there is also a ring that needs to be pushed forward to lock it. This way, you won't accidentally disconnect the connection when pulling on the cable. It's a very nice idea in principle, but unfortunately, the whole construction is a bit bulky.

It's also not entirely optimal. If the cable is pulled back, the adapter doesn't come off, but the power is still interrupted. With firearms with strong recoil, it can happen that your connection is briefly interrupted. However, you are about to take a shot at that moment, so it shouldn't be very noticeable. By using the cable switch, only the "Full Power" mode is available to you, which is not a mistake.

Due to the current lockdowns, we have not been able to extensively test the lamp at the shooting range yet, but we will catch up on that, promised. An upgrade in our opinion would be an end cap that is compatible with Surefire switches and their connectors.

The cable is relatively thick, but also very sturdy. It measures around 18 cm. The switch itself is OK. Unfortunately, it is thicker than the switches of the well-known market leader, so it does not fit in other mounts, such as those from Magpul or Cloud Defense. Too bad. But it has its own ...

The switch mount itself is made of rather stiff rubber and does what it should. Unfortunately, the whole construction is not very discreet, but rather somewhat "bulky". However, it is sturdy.

The Battery

As already mentioned at the beginning, the ODIN Mini is powered by a special battery. This is thicker than the well-known 18650 batteries that are commonly used in the market.

It cannot currently be bought separately, which we find unfortunate, as we would like to carry spare batteries for our light if possible. Unfortunately, CR123A batteries also do not fit in the ODIN Mini, as it is not designed as a "dual fuel" lamp.

General

The brightness of the ODIN Mini is very convincing. The 1,250 to 900 lumens available to you for about 15 minutes are definitely sufficient for long guns.

We prefer the pressure switch for operation over the cable switch, but tastes differ here. It also depends very much on the weapon to which you mount your ODIN Mini whether you can reach the pressure switch well at all.

CONCLUSION: The Olight ODIN Mini is a compact and valid long gun light. It also looks good on a helmet. We are still somewhat undecided about the battery, as you cannot (yet) buy a replacement. The magnetic switch could be a bit more stable and less bulky. We really like the push button on the ODIN Mini and almost exclusively use it. Overall, the ODIN Mini offers a very convincing price-performance ratio.
