REVIEW: Olight Marauder 2

01/28/2021By Redaktion

And God said: "Let there be light!" And there was light. And there were 14,000 lumens coming from something little bigger than a half-liter beer can? And it's not a myth, but the shining truth: Here is the Marauder 2 by Olight, a search and rescue flashlight that truly has it all. We didn't just look at it, we made the night into day with it. And we tell you: you can take that literally! Amen!

This is what the light source looks like. There's little divine about it. It's only 14 cm long and has a handle diameter of 5.3 cm. With as much light as we will see later, we would have expected much larger dimensions. The weight is 750 grams.

You will receive the Olight Marauder 2 in an elegant box that not only holds the fat light wonder, but also all the necessary accessories.

The accessories include a power adapter with a matching EU socket adapter. Simply plug them together and you can charge the Marauder 2.

Of course, the appropriate USB-C to USB-C cable is also included. The red light on the Marauder 2 indicates that it is charging. Because the substance that makes the thing shine comes from the socket.

The Marauder 2 should be fully charged in a maximum of 2.5 hours. If you charge it via a power bank or another charging adapter (e.g. from a cell phone), it may take longer until the 5,000 mAh battery is full. When the light turns green, the Marauder 2 is definitely fully charged. Time for an appearance.

The power adapter that came with ours – in the front of the picture – unfortunately has a loose contact and only fulfills its task after some fiddling with most sockets. Fiddling is not godly...

Alternative solution: The power supply itself has a US plug, so we quickly got a US to EU travel plug and now we have no more problems with charging. Annoying, but we suspect that we got a lemon, it happens in the best families.

The lamp head has a diameter of 7.9 cm and houses twelve circularly arranged LEDs and a large lens in the middle. As expected, this is where the awesome light comes out. And it's very bright, with up to 160,000 candela and 14,000 lumens.

The Marauder 2 is waterproof and shockproof according to IPX8 and can withstand falls from up to a meter high. This means the Marauder 2 can be submerged up to two meters. The USB-C port is waterproof, the iris cover serves only as dust protection.

The technical data is very extensive, but for those who want, they can find it HERE directly at Olight.

The handle is rubberized and feels very good and non-slip. The thickness of the flashlight is also very comfortable. You have something substantial in your hand.

For the perfect fit - so it doesn't feel like holding a beer can - you'll find light finger grooves on the Marauder 2.

If you're afraid the Marauder 2, which is also a valuable item, might slip out of your hand, there is a fold-out lanyard loop on the handle. Very well thought out.

Where there is a loop, there should be paracord. This lanyard is included in the delivery and already neatly wrapped. Ideal for hanging the divine light.

The Marauder 2 is designed so that it doesn't roll away easily. The lamp head rim is jagged and can also be used as a glass breaker. Even bad guys would see stars at this sight...

Here is a size comparison. The good Marauder 2 with a standard (bad) 30-round magazine. You can see the status indicator on the lamp light up.

Here you can see the controls of the Marauder 2, a rotary switch and a sliding switch behind it.

The operation of the flashlight is very easy. To turn it on, you have to turn the rotary switch more than 90° (a quarter turn). This will deactivate the safety lock. You now have a few seconds to press the switch. The brightness of the flashlight is regulated by turning the switch. If you want to change the mode (SPOT or FLOOD), you just need to operate the sliding switch.

This may look harmless here... Here are the twelve LEDs of the FLOOD mode. These deliver up to 14,000 lumens as mentioned, and in total, there are seven brightness levels available for both modes.

In the SPOT mode, the middle LED lights up. This mode throws a small, bright square into the dark environment and becomes really effective only from 100m onwards.

At short distances, as shown here, the beam of light is only 1x1 m in size, but very bright.

A part of the treetop is brightly illuminated, but everything around it is dark. Here we are about 150 meters away from the illuminated object.

The flood mode is the exact opposite. At short and medium distances, everything is illuminated in a cone of light of approximately 120°. At the highest level, it is as bright as day. Truly impressive.

From a drone's point of view, the brightness and range of the flood mode can be well imagined. Everything is bathed in daylight up to 80m away. It is still sufficiently bright up to 200m.

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death..." As if the Marauder 2 from Olight could even have a dark valley...

CONCLUSION: The Marauder 2 from Olight offers you tremendous light output in a compact size. Whether you need a searchlight, a rugged lamp for lighting during video shoots, or you simply want an extremely bright lamp for area lighting, the Marauder 2 meets your requirements. For those who want to have fun with it, they can also simulate UFO landings in forest clearings. The simple operation - even with gloves - and the included accessories complete the flawless impression of the Marauder 2. An impressive device for one purpose only: let there be light...
