Glow sticks are great, but they have one significant drawback. Once they are activated, they cannot be turned off or reused. The Flexi-Lights from Northern Diver in the UK offer a solution to this. The principle is simple: a battery with an LED and a switch, encased in silicone. And you are the master of light, whenever you want.
You will receive these small lights individually packaged in foil. All the basic information is printed on the foil. When you open it, you will be hit by a very strong rubber smell, so don't inhale too deeply.
The Flexi-Lights are available in a total of six different colors: Red, Green, Yellow, Blue, White, and Infrared (625-635 nm). As you can see in the picture, there are two different versions, Version 1 and Version 2. Both have a luminous intensity of 8 lumens, just like a traditional glow stick.
Version 1 is the first generation. It is operated by a small push button, and you have two lighting modes to switch through. First, blinking (36h runtime), followed by continuous light (20h runtime), and then "Off" again. Thanks to the small holes, Flexi-Lights can be easily attached anywhere. Version 1 is waterproof up to 60m.
Version 2 is slightly more streamlined and has three lighting modes. The push button is noticeably harder to operate than in Version 1, so hard that your finger begins to ache. The lighting modes are: Low continuous light (40h runtime), High continuous light (20h), and blinking (42h). Due to the new shape, Version 2 is even waterproof up to 100m.
Here is what both versions look like side by side. They are the same length and width, at 110 mm x 25 mm, and also weigh roughly the same.
The Flexi-Lights are similar to a V-Lite from S&S Precision. At their core, both are small LED lights encased in silicone. The silicone of the Flexi-Lights is completely transparent, which is why the entire body does not glow uniformly like the V-Lite.
The lights may look smooth, but they can also be ordered with adhesive or Velcro strips on the back. As an accessory, there is a small reusable clip.
This is perfect for attaching the Flexi-Lights to PALS loops on your equipment. It is also available in black, so no need to worry about this mounting option being too conspicuous.
As mentioned, the lights are waterproof, so we had to test them at night in the damp environment. We didn't go down to 60m, we have to admit, but the lights were still watertight and put on a nice light show— as you can see in our video.
Finally, a small crafting tip. With sandpaper, you can easily roughen the surface, so the Flexi-Lights glow just like V-Lites.
CONCLUSION: The Flexi-Lights from Northern Diver are a successful and well-thought-out alternative to glow sticks. In terms of value for money, they outperform V-Lites by miles. The Flexi-Lights definitely make a good impression on your helmet or gear. And make you visible.
