The S.A.T.L. from Mystery Ranch is the standard backpack of the U.S. Special Operations Command SOCOM. In the image above, you can see it three times with four snipers (the backpack on the left is not an S.A.T.L.), beautifully loaded differently in shape and also in the standard colors Multicam and Coyote. The S.A.T.L. is also available in AOR1 and AOR2, the camouflage patterns of the Navy SEALs (both NSW models are only available on Ebay.com). We took a look at the S.A.T.L. from Mystery Ranch with the help of HIGH QUALITY GEAR.
The S.A.T.L. on your back: The Assault Pack from SOCOM has volume so that the elite soldiers can carry properly. The S.A.T.L. comes in at 60 liters - or, in centimeters: 79cm x 38cm x 33cm. That shouldn't be underestimated. The S.A.T.L. is designed for load-bearing and mass. If you want to take so much stuff with you, you need a good...
...back. This makes the S.A.T.L. a miracle of carrying: Mystery Ranch is simply top class when it comes to designing the back area. It is height adjustable so that the backpack can be adjusted to the size of the person (we will look at the system for this further below), has a double-sided adjustable hip belt, which is supposed to take on most of the load correctly, and on the back you can also see the BVS system from Mystery Ranch. The S.A.T.L. is designed for carrying with a plate carrier. (The pants in the image are the Kryptek Pant from Vertx.)
If you want to get into the body of the S.A.T.L., there are some options for you. Here you can see on the right the access to the storage from above. But in the cap (left) there is also a compartment that can hold a lot.
There are two large external pockets, which are long and high and filled look like sausages (empty they resemble pulled white sausages). Storage space for things that need to be quickly available, or a jacket that must be at hand. These compartments zip lengthwise.
The main compartment has a large zipper that allows you to open the S.A.T.L. completely while lying on the ground. An ideal solution, because this way the user has full access. Digging and diving into the backpack from the top is eliminated (this is usually the case with other backpacks, where what you are looking for is always stored at the bottom of the backpack).
This is how you can also access the S.A.T.L.: There is an extra zipper in the neck to release the lid. Particularly practical, because in the S.A.T.L. you should also be able to mount a radio the size of a PRC-117. There are side pockets where you can insert something and MOLLE loops to attach it. With the MOLLE, additional items can also be attached. Mystery Ranch has some nice pockets for this purpose.
The secret of the height-adjustable back is the paddle with which the height adjustment is made. It is inserted between the backpack and the back part to release the full-surface Velcro. It is then left in place and the back part, to which the shoulder straps are also attached, can be easily adjusted in height. Once you are satisfied with the height, simply remove the paddle and return it to the storage compartment. Here you can immediately see: Mystery Ranch has thought of something and the company's reputation is well deserved. The carrying system is high-end in construction and execution.
The SATL is designed for wearing with a Plate Carrier: the so-called BVS system from Mystery Ranch consists of two plastic pads strapped on the back on the right and left, which stabilize the backpack on the plate carrier (here, by the way, an NJPC in AOR1).
CONCLUSION: The Mystery Ranch S.A.T.L. is a workhorse that is perfectly made. It is designed to be loaded and yet provide the maximum comfort possible in the situation. From the radio to the equipment, it takes everything and is ultimately even bigger than it looks. A backpack for people who value quality.
You can get the Mystery Ranch SATL in Germany at HIGH QUALITY GEAR for 469 euros in Coyote, 539 euros in Multicam. Inquiries to [email protected] or [email protected]
