Everything is delivered in a simple box. It includes the Suppressor Shield, as well as an information sheet, Torx screwdriver, and a stylish Multicam-Black storage bag.
On the back of the information sheet is an instruction manual. It also mentions possible extensions: one can, for example, replace the American flag on the top of the mount with a front sight from Unity Tactical. (Costing around €120 extra, depending on the version and retailer.)
Here is the mount, which is attached to the top of the RIS on the weapon. The good piece is held in place with the RIS clamp mount.
MADE IN USA. Manufactured in America, hence an American flag motif and cover plate are included.
Now, let's talk about the Suppressor Shield. Here is the view with the thread. Inside, there are hole bores to further reduce the weight.
There are large openings on the underside so that more air can reach the suppressor, allowing it to cool better.
The biggest question when ordering online is what size to choose. The manufacturer offers sizes from 5 inches to 9.5 inches in 0.5 inch increments. We opted for the 6.5 inch size.
The length was chosen because the suppressor from the tip to the beginning of the RIS is around 17.5 centimeters long. 7 inches are 17.78 centimeters - 6.5 inches are 16.5 centimeters. We wanted to make sure that the suppressor sticks out a bit and is not completely covered, so we chose the shorter version to be on the safe side. In hindsight, maybe the 7 inch version would have been a bit better.
During mounting, one can slightly vary the distance and length. Depending on whether you want it to protrude or not, the mounting ring can be moved slightly, and the RIS clamp can be fixed at the desired distance.
Pay attention to the torque and use threadlocker, then it will hold firmly. We pushed it all the way to the RIS and screwed it tight.
If you now want to mount the Suppressor Shield, simply align the two arrows together.
A quarter turn, tightened slightly by hand, is enough and it sits firmly centered.
Once installed, you can see that the Suppressor Shield does not have direct contact with the silencer. This allows the silencer to be ideally cooled by air. Hot air is not additionally trapped, as is the case with traditional covers.
If the silencer is fired hot, the Shield's qualities become apparent. The first time it may smoke a little, but it dissipates relatively quickly. No worries, there is only some oil smoking here. When heating up, it smokes really only directly from the silencer.
Now let's talk about the reasons that distinguish the MODTAC Suppressor Shield. It is made of carbon with particularly heat-resistant epoxy resin. It is designed to withstand around 1200 degrees Fahrenheit (~650 degrees Celsius). Due to its construction, in the 6.5-inch version it weighs only about 160 grams, with 40 grams of that weight coming from the mounting on the RIS. For comparison, a suitable Manta Cover of the same size weighs 140 grams, and in a direct comparison, the weight is also distributed a bit more to the front than with the MODTAC solution, which is closer to the shooter.
A silencer cover is additionally necessary to reduce heat shimmer, which is particularly noticeable when aiming at a distant target through a magnification. Other silencer covers have unfortunately melted on me due to the stress of various Brutality Style competitions.
An alternative would be the Manta Suppressor Cover. This is also used by special forces and withstands high temperatures, but it has a significant disadvantage. It cannot be easily and quickly removed.
Therefore, we were looking for a cover that can be quickly mounted and removed, and also provides heat protection. This way, it is possible to quickly switch to the cover during competitions where it is possible and necessary, and quickly remove it again when required.
The silencer has an outer diameter of 4.7 centimeters. The Suppressor Shield has an inner diameter of 5 centimeters. Unfortunately, the diameter of the Suppressor Shield is too thick to pass through the narrow openings of a V-TAC Barricade, for example. These are often seen in competitions - but in such cases, the cover can be quickly removed.
CONCLUSION: The MODTAC Suppressor Shield offers a high-quality solution to a problem that likely affects a minority. The price is quite high at 500 euros, which is one of its major disadvantages. However, the cover performs well in competitions and training. The suppressor can be optimally cooled, protects the shooter from burns, and keeps heat mirage under control. Additionally, it can be quickly mounted and dismounted.
Here are some other versions of MODTAC.
