REVIEW: FIREPEN - Disposable metal cutting device

FIREPEN has a solution for scenarios like this: A mobile disposable metal cutting device. We introduce it to you. The FIREPEN was designed for those who need a quick solution for cutting metal. This can be special forces and security companies who need to create quick access and do not have heavy equipment with them, but also rescue forces and firefighters who need to free themselves from a scenario - as described above.

The benefits are clear: The FIREPEN is very light at 150 grams, with a length of only 30 cm and a diameter of two centimeters These features make it easy to transport, for example in MOLLE loops, pouches, or backpacks.

The actual burning body is contained in a tube marked with visible yellow stripes. This makes the FIREPEN clearly visible and protects its content. The end of the burning body protrudes from the tube with a yellow handle. If you remove the rod, you can insert the yellow end back into the tube, thus creating an extended handle. To avoid working with a lighter or similar, a friction rod is also included, which is stored in wax paper waterproof in the tube. This can then be ignited on the friction surface of the transport tube and has enough burning time to ignite the burning rod. The FIREPEN generates a temperature of 2800° Celsius in the shortest possible time, with which all kinds of metal up to a thickness of 2.2cm can be cut. The trick: It also burns underwater.

The FIREPEN burns for about 20 seconds, which is sufficient for two cuts in a metal pipe with a thickness of one centimeter. Typical items to cut would be grids, locks, latches, or cables.

We conducted the test: A solid metal pipe with a diameter of one centimeter was no problem for the FIREPEN and was cut in about 10 seconds. The next test was done with a hollow steel tube with a diameter of two centimeters. The wall thickness was about 3mm. Here, cutting took the full burning time and several small explosions followed. The ground also needs to be monitored: the melted metal drips to the ground and leaves a considerable mess.
