REVIEW: Extrema Ratio Task J - the tactical crowbar.

"The Extrema Ratio Task J was developed in collaboration with the Austrian Jagdkommando." This is a statement: Austrian Jagdkommando. The excellent reputation of our special forces is not only serving the current advertising campaign of the Austrian Ministry of Defense. The clever knife manufacturers at Microtech once named their legendary triple-blade dagger "Jagdkommando" to package toughness, toughness, fighting power, exclusivity, and similar martial attributes in the name of an otherwise meaningless stabbing instrument.

The exclusivity of the Task J is actually limited to the "collaboration with the Jagdkommando," clearly evident by the JaKdo wings on the ricasso. The multipurpose knife is a typical Extrema Ratio - shown above is the complete set with sheath and firesteel. High-quality materials cleanly processed. The versatility of the unique blade shape only becomes apparent through "understanding." So piercing, striking, prying, throwing, ... We didn't acquire this piece for display purposes.

And here are the details from the manufacturer:
Blade length: 158 mm.
Blade thickness: 6.3 mm.
Overall length: 289 mm.
Weight: approx. 315 g.

Extrema Ratio® is certified according to UNI EN ISO 9001:2008 and NATO Code (N/CAGE) AD856

The Task J was also tested here by pioneer scouts. Misappropriation? By no means! Austrian pioneers have an equally good reputation in their field as our "snake eaters" do in theirs. The excellent steel had to withstand stresses when working with the preferred building material wood, stresses that would never be imposed on a standard knife.

Dynamic lateral load (as a 90 kg ascent aid +- see above, with percussion tool - see below) and stresses along the blade axis (impact) led to the quite fitting designation of "tactical chisel." After kicking, throwing, hitting, bending, we were still able to observe sufficient sharpness at the precise, convex edge.

The excellent Böhler N690 steel (martensitic chromium steel with cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium addition) is blackened by the oxidation process (according to MIL-C-13924) - matte and durable. The typical guard elements and glass breakers are cleanly processed.

The blade is shaped into a kind of "sheepfoot" tip. The primary tip is at the height of the middle knife axis, despite having two cutting edges, the special shape does not result in an actual secondary tip.

The advantage of the straight edge - shown above, below is the blade from the T400S introduced HERE-, the precise cutting guidance, is complemented by the sharp-angled "second cut" in a meaningful way. Penetration of hard, tough materials is also facilitated by the indicated chisel-like shape at the front third.

Handle made of Forprene (Thermoplastic Elastomer) - non-slip and unmistakably ER design. The typical "two-finger recess" of ER knives increases grip security even in the reverse grip, suitable for both left- and right-handers.

The package includes a high-quality Cordura sheath with MOLLE/PALS attachment system. Well-crafted, straight, precise seams, and a sturdy clip, which can be cumbersome when wearing the knife without a cover.

From Extrema Ratio, the sheath is designed to be worn on the hip, and since it has a Velcro thigh strap, it sits very well there during fast movements. The size of the knife is clearly visible on the hip. No one would want to lose their Extrema Ratio Task J: there is a flap, which is not attached here, that can completely close the sheath - the closure for this can be seen on the sheath. But it makes accessing the knife difficult. It is secured with a double clip that is released with a handle on the left. There is also another safety measure at the bottom to prevent the valuable piece from slipping out of the sheath.
