Everyone has them, the Steyr AUG has long suffered a miserable existence without them: Rails. Well, that's not entirely true anymore, because the civilian version A3 comes with a rail. This is where CORVUS DEFENSIO steps in - HERE in our full review - and completely upgrades the good rifle with a new rail, the A3 receiver rail. This greatly enhances the functionality of the AUG. What makes the A3 receiver rail different? Here it is seen next to an A3 receiver with the factory rail, which fits quite well on the receiver but didn't make it into the military. Looking at it from a different perspective, you can see it is longer. Steyr offers 23 slots, CORVUS DEFENSIO has expanded to 35 slots, all of which are Picatinny. The rear half is prepared for the user to attach a Trijicon optic on the rail. And at the front end of the aluminum rail, there are many funny holes drilled, which are nothing but KeyMod openings, allowing for the attachment of many possible accessories. HERE is the system explained. For military users: attach Picatinny with KeyMod where it is really needed, then mount a laser or PEQ-Box on the side. But first things first, the new part must be mounted. After sacrificing a classic hairdryer, we opted for the heat gun, which is used to loosen the hex screws secured with screw adhesive. Hold it in properly: at 500 degrees, it takes two to three minutes before it starts to smoke lightly and the screws are ready. By the way, wearing gloves is a good idea, the entire upper part of the gun gets hot. The screwdriver works traditionally. Having an extension is useful because the front and rear screws are slightly recessed in the housing and not as exposed as the middle one. Here you can see the old and the new rail peacefully next to each other, along with the three screw openings. The rest is the reverse process. We opted for a very strong screw adhesive because the rail lays directly above the barrel and is exposed to heat inside the housing. Fully assembled. It's clear to see how far the new A3 receiver rail from CORVUS DEFENSIO protrudes. Always neat: the raven head is the logo of the Viennese company that produces these and hopefully more wonderful accessories for the AUG. Now the interplay of the rails above and below the barrel. There is now plenty of room to mount accessories on the gun. The CORVUS DEFENSIO Keymod barrel rail gives the AUG, together with the receiver rail, a completely new look.
