REVIEW: BE-X Pathfinder Tarp

08/24/2015By Redaktion

Scouts usually sleep in tents and not under so-called tarps or sheets. Trackers and forest rangers, on the other hand, might do so more often. Nevertheless, the German company BE-X makes the Pathfinder Tarp, whatever the name may mean!

When unpacking, you hold a solid, robustly made tarp in your hands. It is dyed in a very pleasant, natural color, something between olive green and brown. A small bag is included for storing and transporting the tarp. Two sewn loops or similar would be practical here to better attach it to a backpack.

There are enough loops on the 2.95m x 2.95m tarp itself. Five sufficiently large and very robust loops are placed on each side, three across the middle.

This provides enough hanging and tensioning options to create a nice sleeping spot. There are no limits to the imagination, as the square shape offers all possibilities.

The tarp is made of ripstop nylon, originally used for balloons, but now widely used in the outdoor sector for backpacks and bags. In the case of the "Pathfinder," it is also coated with PU for added rain protection. So, a solid solution.

Pegs and cords are completely missing from the delivery, so you will have to buy them yourself. However, there would be countless solutions here again, it would be too extensive to meet the various requirements and possible applications, so you have to bring them yourself!

In terms of weight, one kilo, it is certainly lighter than most tents, especially in this price range. However, the comparison between a tent and a tarp is not entirely fair. Those who use a tarp want to be as close to nature as possible, yet still have a roof over their heads and enjoy improvising. With a tent, you are already back in your own "four walls" and on the comfortable and safer side.

CONCLUSION: In heavy storms, you will need or want more than a tarp, especially the lack of a floor makes life difficult in the rain. Those seeking adventure and real closeness to nature are right with a tarp. The low weight is also great. The Pathfinder is the top choice here: a mix of sturdy, waterproof fabric, good color, and exceptional hanging options make it a top outdoor tarp. The price of 59.90 is absolutely justified, and you will have a lot of fun with it.

The BE-X Tarp, Pathfinder, 295x295cm - Multi-Terrain Color is available at Begadi for 59.90 Euros.
