Rheinmetall will modernize the Leopard tanks of the Bundeswehr with a comprehensive performance package. The Düsseldorf-based technology conglomerate for mobility and security is responsible for essential elements of the combat value enhancement of 104 Leopard 2 tanks, which will be brought up to the latest design standard. The modernization package and additional services have a net total value of 118 million euros. The first converted series of Leopard 2 A7V main battle tanks - pictured above, of course not from Rheinmetall but as a 1/35 scale model kit; if anyone wants to join in, the link is below - are scheduled to be delivered to the Bundeswehr from 2020.
In total, 68 Leopard 2A4, 16 Leopard 2A6, and 20 Leopard 2A7 tanks will be upgraded to the A7V design standard. As part of the modernization, Rheinmetall will address obsolescence issues in the fire control computer and the computer operator panel, install a new eye-safe laser rangefinder, and integrate a new thermal imaging device.
Rheinmetall will also supply new L55A1 weapon systems for the 68 Leopard 2A4 tanks undergoing modernization. These battle tanks will already have the technical capability to fire the next generation of high-pressure armor-piercing ammunition. All 104 Leopard 2A7V tanks will have the capability to use Rheinmetall's new programmable multipurpose ammunition DM11.
The contract once again highlights Rheinmetall's leading role in the field of tank armament and electronic components for combat vehicles.
