NH90 NTH Sea Lion: The flying classroom

01/19/2021By Redaktion

The German Navy is once again relying on Rheinmetall's simulation expertise for the training of its NH90 NTH Sea Lion helicopter crews. In December 2020, the company received an order from the European NH90 Procurement and Management Organization NAHEMA to deliver an Asterion classroom solution to the Naval Aviation Squadron 5 in Nordholz. The delivery will take place in 2021.

The digital Asterion classroom is used for the training of maintenance personnel for the new Naval Transport Helicopter (NTH) NH90 NTH Sea Lion. The facility includes a soft panel cockpit with instrument display via touchscreens, a mission console trainer required for Navy helicopter training, Asterion software, desktop hardware, and tablets.

Asterion is a modern, integrated holistic training concept for all training phases. It simulates the behavior of all helicopter systems faithfully, such as hydraulic, electrical, or tactical systems.

The upcoming delivery of the digital Asterion classroom represents another sales success within the Bundeswehr. The Asterion simulation software has already been integrated in a similar form into the Functional Cockpit of the Maintenance Training Rigs NH90 NTH. This facility is also used by the Naval Aviation Squadron 5 for the training of maintenance personnel. The Army also uses Asterion simulation technology for its Ground-Crew-Training systems at the International Helicopter Training Center in Faßberg. Here, maintenance and repair personnel of the Army Aviation Corps are trained on three authentic cockpit replicas from Rheinmetall in terms of operating and maintenance procedures for the Army version of the NH90.

This was the maiden flight of the NH90 Sea Lion in 2016

The NH90 program is considered the largest European military helicopter program, in which Rheinmetall is now involved with additional training equipment. Asterion simulation is now listed at NAHEMA, the NH90 Procurement and Management Organization, and is therefore available for all NH90 user nations. Other NH90 user nations have already shown great interest in the concept.

The German Navy has already taken delivery of the first NH90 NTH Sea Lion multi-purpose helicopters and can now conduct comprehensive training of maintenance personnel with Rheinmetall simulators in the future. Training and retraining personnel on the new, very complex helicopter is of highest priority, especially in the initial phase. HERE you can find all information about the NH90 NTH Sea Lion directly from the Bundeswehr.
