In Fort Campbell, Kentucky, some of the newest weapons are being tested that have the potential to redefine the capabilities of US infantry. Last month, soldiers began testing the XM7 rifle and XM250 automatic rifle from Sig Sauer, which are intended to replace the M4/M4A1 assault rifle and the M249 Squad Automatic Weapon (SAW).
This also involves not just the introduction of new weapons, but also a switch in ammunition caliber from 5.56mm to the more powerful 6.8mm. This decision was justified by the need for ammunition with improved penetration capabilities and is expected to significantly increase lethality. Yes, that's what the US Army wrote in their request for the new weapons.
