Rheinmetall has been awarded a contract by the Dutch shipbuilder Damen Naval for the delivery of eight MLG27-4.0 next-generation defense systems for the F126 frigates currently being built by Damen for the German Navy. The contract is worth a double-digit million-euro amount and includes an option to equip two additional F126 frigates.
The Marine Light Gun (MLG) 27 4.0, caliber 27 mm, is part of the new SeaSnake RCWS product family from Rheinmetall Weapon Munition GmbH. The core of the remotely controlled weapon system MLG27 4.0 is the BK-27M revolver cannon.
The predecessor model of the latest MLG27 4.0 is cross-sectionally in use in the German Navy fleet and is also used as secondary armament in the current F125 frigate class.
The next-generation MLG27-4.0 defense system features a number of important technological innovations compared to the previous MLG27. It is a state-of-the-art ship defense system equipped with daylight cameras, infrared sensors, and laser rangefinders, and can be integrated into the existing ship's command system while fully complying with all applicable IT and OT security requirements.
The 27 mm caliber revolver cannon can fire single shots, adjustable bursts, or continuous fire at up to 1,700 rounds per minute. The lightweight design, adjustable area fire capability, and integrated simultaneous tracker distinguish the MLG27-4.0 weapon system.
Combined with the other weapon systems Damen Naval has planned for this project, the F126 frigates will have comprehensive and highly effective armament that provides tactical advantages against a variety of threats.
