NATO: More 155 mm artillery ammunition

08/03/2022By Redaktion

A NATO customer has awarded Rheinmetall Denel Munition's South African subsidiary with the delivery of 155mm ammunition from the proven Assegai product line. The order value is in the higher double-digit million EUR range. The order was placed in July, with deliveries scheduled over the next two years.

The delivery under the new contract includes the complete 155mm Assegai ammunition system, including fuzes, various types of shells including high-explosive ammunition, and the Assegai artillery charges. The Assegai artillery family can be fired from all NATO STANAG-compatible artillery systems, including the Panzerhaubitze 2000.

In 2019, Rheinmetall in South Africa set new range records with the Assegai family and other artillery products like the new Topcharge. With the Assegai system approach from the fuze through the shell to the charges, various systems achieved great ranges. A non-NATO 155mm artillery gun with 52 calibers and a 25-liter charge chamber reached the previous record range of 76 kilometers.

Rheinmetall Denel Munition is already working on further future technologies for artillery. The rocket propulsion of conventional 155mm Assegai shells is being improved. Additionally, a complete new development is underway to achieve ranges of over 155 kilometers.
