Modular medical facilities of the German Armed Forces: Out with the old, in with the new

The Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw) selected Rheinmetall as the contractor for the conversion of additional portions of the Modular Medical Facilities (MSE) at the end of January 2023. The MSE containers included in the scope of the contract are used by the Bundeswehr, for example, as a food chemical laboratory. The total value of the contract is in the higher single-digit million EUR range. The work is expected to be completed by December 2023.

MSE containers describe the family of modular medical facilities. The units, which have been manufactured since the 1990s, have been procured in different variants and are now being extensively refurbished.

The MSE consist of rescue stations, rescue centers, and field hospitals that are used in the Bundeswehr's operational areas. Individual systems perform specific tasks, such as the food chemical laboratory (LMC). The technical and medical equipment of the LMC provides the material basis for food and water safety in the field. The container systems are classified according to the International Convention for Safe Containers (CSC), stackable, and suitable for transportation on container ships, among other uses. The systems and their equipment are adapted in terms of scope and functionality.

Since 2019, Rheinmetall Project Solutions GmbH has pooled resources and capabilities for the field of operational support and is responsible for mobile deployable operational solutions. The aim is to provide long-term support to customers in their missions through specific services. The company was founded by Rheinmetall AG to manage services and projects for operational support.
