Five MEXICAN NATIONAL GUARD soldiers were killed and two injured by gunfire following a series of attacks on Sunday the 16th of March along the Jalisco-Michoacan border in western Mexico.
Hijacked vehicles were set on fire along several highways preceding the attacks, and local news reports attributed the violence to members of the Jalisco New Generation Cartel, or CJNG. Videos shared online by Mexican news outlets showed masked men firing automatic weapons from behind parked vehicles.
According to Mexican news outlets, another attack took place around 6 p.m. Sunday on a highway between the towns of La Piedad and Zamora, Michoacan. Metal spikes placed on the road punctured the tires of a MEXICAN ARMY vehicle caravan, and the soldiers came under fire as they dismounted to repair their vehicles. Three soldiers were killed and two wounded in this attack.
A NATIONAL GUARD patrol also came under gunfire in La Barca, Jalisco, and two Guard members were killed in this attack.
