Rheinmetall has won a high-volume contract to support Ukraine with artillery ammunition. The Düsseldorf-based technology group has been tasked with delivering shells worth around 142 million euros to the Eastern European country. The order includes a five-figure number of complete artillery shells in caliber 155mm, which consists of the complete combination of projectile, fuze (for the explosive charge), propellant charge, and primer (for igniting the propellant). The client is a NATO partner country that has a stated goal of effectively and permanently supporting Ukraine's defense efforts.
The shells are being manufactured by Rheinmetall's subsidiary, Rheinmetall Expal Munitions, the company's most recent acquisition in Spain. The current contract underscores Rheinmetall's role as the world's largest ammunition manufacturer, especially in the field of large-caliber ammunition. The shells are scheduled to be delivered throughout the year 2025. In 2024, the production and delivery of around 40,000 shells for Ukraine from a previous contract are already planned.
In mid-October 2023, as part of the German government's aid to Ukraine, Rheinmetall was tasked with delivering over one hundred thousand 155mm shells - also from Rheinmetall Expal Munitions - as well as additional DM 121 high explosive shells. The contract amounted to a medium triple-digit million euro sum.
The demand for artillery ammunition is currently very high, both for the urgent needs of Ukraine and for replenishing the largely empty ammunition depots in Germany and other NATO and EU countries. For the year 2024, Rheinmetall plans to produce around 700,000 artillery shells in total following a significant increase in capacity at production facilities in Germany, Spain, South Africa, and Australia.
Rheinmetall currently holds multi-year framework contracts with the German Armed Forces for the delivery of several hundred thousand artillery shells worth over 1 billion euros.
