Well armored, the Challenger 3

01/18/2024By Redaktion

The contract for the next generation modular armor for the Challenger 3 has been signed. Designed by world-leading armor experts at Dstl and developed in collaboration with Rheinmetall BAE Systems Land (RBSL), the new modular armor provides a significant improvement in the survivability of the British main battle tank.

The new modular armor, designed by the world's leading armor experts at the Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (DSTL) and developed in collaboration with RBSL, significantly improves the survivability of the British main battle tank. Following initial integration tests in 2023, RBSL will now proceed to test, produce, and install the new armor in the Challenger 3.

The enhanced survivability will better protect soldiers from the most dangerous threats the Challenger 3 will face. Investing in this critical capability will benefit the British Army now and in the future. The Challenger 3 will be a key component of the Army's future tank brigade and the British contribution to NATO deterrence.

This contract is a crucial part of the defense industry strategy. It creates British intellectual property, maintains the national supply chain, and secures capabilities in the United Kingdom. It will secure up to 58 jobs in Newcastle and Telford during the initial production phase and beyond, when export orders are placed.
