Gray Man: Protection against overhead surveillance

07/19/2017By Redaktion

Drones are becoming cheaper and more powerful. Modern drones are therefore equipped with an infrared and/or night vision camera. Whether it's day or night, hiding from these devices is becoming increasingly difficult.

How can you best camouflage against these reconnaissance tools?

  • During the day: Use shadows. Whether from trees or buildings, shadows provide protection. Of course, the denser the forest or the narrower the alley, the better. Additionally, nets or camouflage colors and materials are ideal for disappearing from the eye above.
  • At night: Seek shelter in buildings or hide under dense trees. Dense vegetation can also provide good cover in emergencies. Any light sources should be avoided at night. These are usually visible from a distance.
  • Heat camouflage: Any cover that is not in direct contact with your body is suitable for this purpose. A wall, or a dense tree. In addition, rescue blankets are a good option to reduce your heat signature. In summer, also consider that, depending on the environment, the ambient temperature may already be close to body temperature. This makes it extremely difficult for thermal cameras to identify persons.
  • Spread glass or other reflective material on top of a car or building roof, causing reflections of the sun. A drone camera will have trouble getting a clear image.
  • Baits are a good proven method. Do not underestimate them and use them if you have the opportunity. Whether a mannequin, or a jacket stuffed with branches, with a cap on top. It distracts from you and that is the goal.
  • Avoid wireless communication! Phones or other communication devices can be traced. The smartphone is a mobile beacon. The best camouflage is useless if you are an electronic lighthouse.
  • Bad weather. Drones cannot fly in strong wind or rain. Use these natural time windows wisely.
