Rheinmetall and General Motors Defense are cooperating on a major project in the area of tactical logistics vehicles for the U.S. Army. The U.S. subsidiary American Rheinmetall Vehicles, a leading developer of tactical wheeled and tracked vehicles and systems, has entered into a strategic cooperation with GM Defense LLC to participate in the U.S. Army's "Common Tactical Truck (CTT)" project. The goal of the CTT program is to find a replacement platform for the Army's Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles.
The U.S. Army expects to conduct several prototype projects before making a decision on initial production. In total, the project could involve approximately 5,700 vehicles worth around $5 billion USD. A solicitation for the first phase was released at the end of June, with contract awards expected by December 2022.
Rheinmetall's subsidiary Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) is a world leader in the development and manufacture of tactical military vehicles. The company's HX family of trucks has been sold to 20 customers worldwide, including the armed forces of partner countries such as Germany, Australia, the UK, Austria, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. Rheinmetall recently introduced the new HX3 truck series, which features even higher performance, mobility, and driver assistance systems (ADAS), as well as the ability to integrate hybrid technology or new capabilities like "Leader-Follower" applications (convoy drives with a lead vehicle and autonomously following unmanned additional vehicles) or autonomous driving.
The Military-off-the-Shelf HX3 series incorporates essential commercial technologies reflecting the joint venture between Rheinmetall and MAN Truck & Bus. This simplifies logistics and maintenance on one hand and offers benefits for vehicle modernization on the other. An Americanized HX3 serves as the basis for the offering that the American Rheinmetall Vehicles and GM Defense team will submit to the U.S. Army in the first phase of the CTT program. Thanks to its open architecture, the base vehicle of the HX3 will allow for continuous modernization and capability growth in line with technological advances. This will reduce obsolescence issues and overall life cycle costs.
The CTT program is a Rapid Prototyping project that employs a medium-term procurement strategy and OTA procedures. This will enable the U.S. Army to quickly acquire and test tactical truck prototypes to replace its current Family of Heavy Tactical Vehicles. The U.S. Army is looking for modern platforms with advanced driver safety systems, increased off-road capabilities, cybersecurity, machine learning, artificial intelligence, enhanced survivability, fuel efficiency, and other new technologies. The program will enable the U.S. Army to replace older vehicles like the Palletized Load System (PLS), the Heavy Expanded Mobility Tactical Truck (HEMTT), the M915 Line Haul Tractor, and other platforms in the current heavy and medium tactical wheeled vehicle fleet. A truck with a high degree of commercial elements capable of performing military tasks and incorporating commonalities among the Army's different mission areas is a top priority for the Army.
GM Defense is a rapidly growing wholly owned subsidiary of the global technology company General Motors (GM) – one of the world's largest automakers, delivering 2.2 million vehicles in 2021 alone and the largest commercial provider of military vehicles in history. As GM's entity established specifically for government business, GM Defense will bring its impressive manufacturing capabilities and technological excellence to the CTT team, leveraging GM's innovations and portfolio of commercial technologies to enhance its customers' capabilities. GM Defense was selected to deliver the Infantry Squad Vehicle (ISV) to the U.S. Army under an Other Transaction Authority (OTA) contract, and is familiar with Rapid Prototyping, agile design and engineering, and quick delivery processes.
"American Rheinmetall Vehicles is a dedicated partner to the U.S. Army, bringing next-generation capabilities and technologies to high-priority modernization programs like CTT. GM Defense shares our commitment, and together we will deliver a versatile truck to the Army and its soldiers“, said Matthew Warnick, CEO of American Rheinmetall Vehicles. "General Motors has a century of experience supporting the Department of Defense and has design, engineering, and manufacturing in its DNA. GM Defense continues this legacy by being able to develop and deploy advanced technologies quickly, which is a vital capability for the American Rheinmetall Vehicles team and our exceptional CTT offering."
"Following the successful delivery of the ISV to our customer, GM Defense is excited to deliver another exceptional mobility solution for our soldiers in partnership with American Rheinmetall Vehicles as part of the U.S. Army's CTT program“, said Steve duMont, President of GM Defense. "This strategic collaboration allows GM Defense to showcase its advanced capabilities while leveraging GM's innovation and proven commercial technology. With the HX3 from American Rheinmetall Vehicles as the starting platform, I am confident that together we will deliver a compelling solution that meets or exceeds the Army's requirements and provides a basis for growth and technology introduction to support our soldiers well into the future," duMont continued.
Technology for the future: The HX3-CTT offers a modern, interchangeable, protected cabin design, advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), and Drive-by-Wire operation. The new electrical architecture with open systems allows for rapid integration of leader-follower and autonomous capabilities that focus on protecting the most valuable asset – the soldiers.
Commonality in the family: The HX3-CTT is the new, forward-looking variant of the globally successful HX family of tactical logistic vehicles. It stands out for its extremely high degree of commonality and modularity among the different variants: transport, swap body system, tanker and long-haul truck. The HX family, configurable from 4x4 to 10x10 chassis, can meet every military need.
Modern technologies in the DNA: The HX3-CTT benefits from great advances in the areas of commercial vehicle technology, safety, fuel efficiency, and emission reduction. The HX family has been optimized for military use and is therefore ready for immediate deployment. Drawing on commercial technologies reduces costs and obsolescence risks, increases part availability, and makes maintenance easier.
An international user family of allies: The HX family has been sold to 20 customers worldwide, including an active allied user group. These include Germany, Australia, Great Britain, Austria, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. More information about the HX3.
