For the 60th anniversary, a monument was unveiled in Moscow to honor inventor and designer Mikhail Kalashnikov. Commissioned by the Kalashnikov Concern, sculptor Salavat Tscherbakow was allowed to work on it relatively unsupervised. Various weapons adorn the base of the monument that were created under the name Kalashnikov. But upon closer inspection, seasoned observers could see that something wasn't quite right.Hidden behind the AKS-74U on the right side was a blueprint sketch of a German Sturmgewehr 44 (StG-44) from World War II. This revolutionary weapon - the first assault rifle in firearms history - looks very similar to the AK, it certainly inspired the development of the AK, even though the technical solutions inside the Kalashnikov are different.
Worldwide laughter, and of course previously general amazement that weapons designer Mikhail Kalashnikov has his own monument. The lapse in the monument has now been promptly corrected: in the Russian way, so to speak. With the angle grinder. This is how the corner with the AKS-74U looks now...
