The Bundeswehr has ordered nearly one million smoke hand grenades for the troops. A corresponding framework contract for the production and delivery was signed today by the President of the Bundeswehr Procurement Office, Annette Lehnigk-Emden, with the manufacturer Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH. In total, up to 1.5 million smoke hand grenades of the type DM 45 can be procured from the agreement in the coming years. Prior to this, the Budget Committee of the German Bundestag approved the project as part of a so-called "25 million proposal."
Financed from the special assets of the Bundeswehr, the agreement now concluded - with the ordering of nearly one million smoke hand grenades - has a volume of around 67 million euros. This allows for a flexible annual call-off of ammunition based on the identified needs of the troops until the year 2027.
The grenade with the official designation "Granate, Hand, DM45, 800 g, KM" has been in use by the Bundeswehr since the mid-1990s. Unlike anti-personnel hand grenades, this ammunition does not explode. The pyrotechnic charge in the grenade produces strong smoke when ignited. The resulting smoke screen can obscure the view of enemy forces and conceal the movements of one's own troops. The smoke hand grenade fully meets the requirements of the troops in training, exercises, and operations.
