EDELWEISS ADVENTURE: Course Focus Solo CQB

09/25/2023By Redaktion

If you have ever been to an event at Edelweiss, you have probably been to the RSA 3 on the upper floor. This is also affectionately referred to as the Kill House. In line with this, they also offer a course, training - Focus Solo CQB. If you own a weapon for self-defense at home, you should not only be able to handle it, but also know how to move yourself and the weapon in tight spaces. The training is conducted by a trained and commercial personal protection officer, as well as shooting instructors.

Once registered and arrived, the theoretical part starts right away, on the upper floor at Edelweiss. Air-conditioned and with a large screen, the first basics and content are taught here. What is the goal of the course, what background do the participants have, and what should be taken into account. New terms are learned, rooms and corridors are structured and explained in more detail.

Here, for example, you can see a Center-Fed Room with a possible scenario. Such a Dynamic Entry does not end well for the shooter and must be avoided. Additional terms are also learned, such as Corner-Fed Room, T-Shape, L-Shape (for corridors, for example). The theoretical part may sound short, but it is a comprehensive basis that must be referred back to later when it comes to the scenario. Where to stand, how to open a door, how to move and clear a room. How to possibly retreat and where to stand for optimal cover.

Once the head is filled with information and starts to smoke, there is a short break. Then it's off to the new hall to put the theoretical part into practice. Before entering the room, it is ensured that no live weapons are present to avoid endangering anyone. Sharp weapons are not needed for this course, instead classic Red weapons are used, which are not capable of firing, as well as Umarex Airsoft Gas Blow Back pistols.

Looking around the hall, you discover first puppets. Here you can see some examples of how the Kill House can be used. If there are no active enemy actors, different targets can be distributed, which are often used in various competitions at Edelweiss.

Here is an overview of the hall. There are several rooms and corridors inside. L Shaped corridor with Center-Fed Room on the left. On the right, you can see a Corner-Fed Room.

The participants in the hall, reviewing and showing where to stand, how to move.

The weapon should be close to the body, pay attention to the feet so as not to step too far forward, and proceed carefully. This is a good start for right-handed shooters. Left-handed shooters already face their first problem: should they hold the gun with their weak hand or not. Such issues are also addressed and explained with background knowledge of when it makes sense. The atmosphere is very friendly and open, with a lively exchange of information, and participants are always happy to ask questions, as do we. Because you only realize some things when you go through them yourself. It is helpful to receive an answer with background knowledge right away.

The participants also get to experience it themselves and go through it in dry training. Possible misalignments or similar issues are corrected. You can see how comprehensive it can be to secure a simple door.

Step by step, the room is worked through, with different approaches explained. But that's not all, it moves on to the next challenge, an L-shaped corridor. For simplicity, an adjacent door is initially ignored to not make things more complex.

A big plus at the Edelweiss facility is that furniture is distributed throughout the area. A chair, cupboard, or even a living room table and couch. Even more is scattered in the rooms, giving you a bit more realism. You have to move around and check to see if someone could be hiding behind it. After all, who has an empty room at home?

A fast approach is naturally slowed down, giving you practice in moving safely through the room.

Once you have internalized all the theory and dry training, gone through the rooms, you get to try Force on Force. Two participants go head-to-head. One is the enemy, the other is the defender. Armed with airsoft pistols, the defender must apply their newly learned knowledge. The enemy, however, has evil intentions. It quickly becomes clear how difficult it is to pay attention to the details. To avoid exposing too much of themselves when checking what's going on in a room. If you present too much of a target, the enemy has an easier time landing a hit.

Even though airsoft pistols don't leave behind any color, you can definitely feel a hit. Even on thin skin areas, like finger knuckles, where light injuries can occur. Gloves and other protective gear are therefore highly recommended, as explained on the website.

One must be careful that the Force on Force scenario does not turn too much into a fun game. While fun is allowed, the serious background should not be forgotten. The trainer observes the whole thing and provides valuable feedback and tips after each run on what could have been done better. The entire training is done with a handgun, but if needed, a long gun can also be used in the facility. However, this is not initially provided in the standard course. Individual training as a person or group is available, or you can book the hall for yourself.

After four hours, the course is already over. As is common with other courses, one only truly realizes how comprehensive a topic is and how much there is still to learn when one delves into it. The first building block has been laid and a lot of knowledge has been imparted. Tips for dry training at home complete the whole experience and leave one wanting more. We would love to delve further into the world and also experience training with long weapons. Personally, we are already very familiar with Airsoft and know the possibilities of using Airsoft matches for training. Some other participants had their first contact with Airsoft and also show interest in wanting to use it more.

We are looking forward to visiting the hall again. In addition to Airsoft, FX or T4E, as well as other FOF variants, are also used if necessary to achieve the necessary training effect.

The courses are advertised directly by Edelweiss. As mentioned earlier, the hall can also be booked and reserved separately for FX or FOF scenarios. You can find all further information about the CQB Kill House HERE directly at Edelweiss.
