Echelon Software: Black Powder Red Earth as a game

10/22/2018By Redaktion

ECHELON Software announces three new additions to the Black Powder Red Earth® family (BPRE).

Number 1 is ECHELON's first foray into miniatures wargaming. In collaboration with Spectre Miniatures, the ECHELON team has selected a series of Cold Harbor Assaulters for the Spectre Operations Tabletop Modern War Game. These 28mm miniatures are based on Ember QRF teams depicted in the BPRE Yemen graphic novel and were modeled after the exact specifications of these Assaulters. The expected release date of the set is Black Friday 2018. "We are very excited to be part of Black Powder Red Earth and bring BPRE into the world of tabletop games," emphasizes Stephen May from Spectre Miniatures.

Continuing the line, the ECHELON team is also designing a cooperative PVE board game focused on the application of small unit tactics in asymmetric urban warfare. With a campaign and rule system developed from the ground up for small groups operating in "non-permissive" urban environments, the game focuses on military decision-making processes using cutting-edge weapons, taking place in real locations with real challenges, as seen in the graphic novels and Black Powder Red Earth. Spectre Miniatures will develop the model components of the game and also advise on the development of a smooth gameplay.

Finally, ECHELON has begun developing an animated miniseries for BPRE. Designed as a 3-episode animated series, series creator Jon Chang has been researching and developing the scenario since August 2017 with SMEs from US Army Special Operations. As with all BPRE projects, the team pays special attention to ensuring that all missions, tactics, and equipment are authentic, and that the correct enemy combat techniques are represented.

Work on the script began in August 2018 with the aim of developing a storyboard in October. In January 2019, the BPRE team will travel to Tokyo, where a collaboration will be finalized to realize this third project. "As lifelong anime fans, going back to series like Space Cruiser Yamato (StarBlazers), Macross, Akira, Gunbuster, and Area 88, it is a dream for us to bring the BPRE story to the screen in this way," says Jon Chang.
