DM45: Let there be mist ...

Rheinmetall has been commissioned by the Bundeswehr to deliver around one million DM45 smoke hand grenades. On May 22, the President of the Federal Office for Equipment, Information Technology, and Use of the Bundeswehr (BAAINBw), Annette Lehnigk-Emden, and Rheinmetall Waffe Munition GmbH signed a framework contract for the production and delivery. In total, up to 1.5 million DM 45 smoke hand grenades can be procured from the agreement over the coming years. The potential order volume is approximately 67 million EUR for the delivery of around one million smoke hand grenades, financed from the Bundeswehr's special assets. The framework contract is valid until 2027 and allows for annual flexible delivery of ammunition based on the identified needs of the troops. The DM45 is produced at the Rheinmetall site in Silberhütte in the Harz region (Saxony-Anhalt). The contract awarded now means a longer-term utilization of the production facility.

The smoke hand grenade is officially designated as "Grenade, Hand, DM45, 800 g, KM". It has been in use by the Bundeswehr since the mid-1990s. The smoke hand grenade creates a smoke screen when its pyrotechnic charge is ignited, thus forming a fog wall. This interrupts the line of sight, deceiving enemy forces or concealing one's own movements. The DM45 smoke hand grenade fully meets the requirements of the troops for training, exercises, and operations.
