This Leopard is a Pole

09/14/2021By Redaktion

"Leopard Polski" is our code name for the big equipment, after all, it is correctly called Leopard 2PL. At MSPO 2021, the Polish army is showcasing its new battle tank Leopard 2PL, whose first serial vehicles were presented at MSPO 2020. The PL variant is a modernized version of the Leopard 2A4, which Poland acquired in the 2000s. The modernization was carried out in cooperation with Rheinmetall and the Polish Armaments Group.

In early November 2020, the formal acceptance procedure for another batch of newly modernized Leopard 2A4 tanks with the designation Leopard 2PL ended at the Zakłady Mechaniczne Bumar - Labedy SA plant. The modernized tanks are expected to be introduced into the 1st Warsaw Armoured Brigade.

The modernization of Leopard 2A4 tanks to the 2PL standard includes replacing the hydraulic gun stabilization and turret drive with electric systems, improving the 120mm smoothbore gun Rh-120 L44 and adapting it to new types of ammunition, including programmable ammunition, while retaining the ability to use Polish ammunition. The Leopard 2PL is also equipped with new optoelectronic systems: 3rd generation thermal imaging cameras of the type KLW-1 Asteria in the commander's and gunner's observation and sighting devices. The tank's turret has been equipped with additional armor modules and anti-fragmentation mats. Inside, the vehicle has new fire and explosion protection systems. The scope of the work applies to all tanks and is mainly carried out by the forces of the Polish defense industry.
